Worshippers protested in San Cristóbal de las Casas against narcopolitics and demanded justice. The event highlighted the ongoing issues of crime, insecurity, and the need for reconciliation and governmental action.

Protest Against Narcopolitics in Chiapas

In a demonstration held in Chiapas, parishioners from 43 parishes in regions affected by organized crime came together demanding peace and justice. During the walk to the Cathedral, they sang praises and messages such as: 'Stop organized crime!', 'Out with cartels from Chiapas!' and 'Out with narco-politics!'. Important religious figures participated in the protest, including the Apostolic Nuncio in Mexico, Joseph Spiteri, and bishops Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez and Luis Manuel López Alfaro. Inhabitants of Benemérito de las Américas also joined, denouncing the complicity of local authorities.

In January, the government presented the 'Peacebuilding Strategy in Chiapas'. Although health programs, literacy initiatives, and scholarships were announced as part of the actions to address the causes of violence, residents believe that the omission and complicity of authorities have allowed organized crime to advance. The Apostolic Nuncio emphasized the importance of forgiveness, reconciliation, and justice, stating that it is essential to achieve true peace.

In Frontera Comalapa, a municipality bordering Guatemala, residents have suffered forced recruitment, disappearances, murders, and forced displacement due to disputes between criminal groups. Despite the detention of a mayor for alleged links to organized crime, residents report that checkpoints are still present on alternate roads, and the displaced are threatened when attempting to return. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of the region united in a pilgrimage in commemoration of Bishop Samuel Ruiz García.

The Diocese of San Cristóbal de Las Casas has urged to disarm criminal groups, rebuild social fabric, and seek justice for the murder of a priest in October. Despite some progress in reducing violence generated by organized crime, a sense of insecurity and control by criminal groups persists in various communities. In a call to action, the government is urged to urgently address the situation and ensure the safety of the inhabitants.
